Work · Case study 01

Alexander Watson Counselling.

A complete practice identity and website built from the inside out: first clarifying the work, then making it recognisable to the people it is for.

Alexander Watson Counselling website, identity and strategic working materials

An open disclosure

This is my own practice project.

It is not presented as commissioned client work. That matters. It also allows a level of transparency that a client case study cannot: the early uncertainty, the decisions that followed, selected redacted working material, and the parts I would now do differently. It is evidence of the process and standard I am building—not a substitute for future independent client outcomes.

The strategic decisions

The project is best understood through the choices behind it.

01

What was unclear at the beginning

The original question was not “what should the website look like?” It was how to describe a person-centred counselling practice without generic wellbeing language, a forced niche, or claims that felt larger than the real work. The work needed a clear, calm way for suitable clients to recognise the practice.

02

What Practice Clarity revealed

Written discovery brought the important material into one place: the therapeutic approach, the experience of a first session, the kinds of concerns clients bring, practical boundaries, and what a client needs to feel before making contact. That became the source for structure, copy and visual direction.

03

Positioning and language

The language was deliberately made direct, warm and unshowy. Instead of promising transformation or positioning counselling as a product, the site explains what the space is like, who it may help and how to take the next step. Clarity and emotional safety became more important than cleverness.

04

Identity rationale

The identity needed to feel professional and considered without becoming clinical, decorative or overly therapeutic. The final direction uses quiet editorial typography, restrained colour and a flexible logo system to make the practice feel settled and credible. The identity supports the words rather than competing with them.Specialist production: I established and directed the creative direction. A specialist identity designer produced the final logo system from the approved brief, with two structured refinement rounds. I remained responsible for ensuring the identity, language and website worked as one system.

05

Website and enquiry journey

The website follows the questions a cautious prospective client tends to have: “Is this for someone like me?”, “What would it be like?”, “What are the practical details?” and “Can I contact you safely?” Navigation, page order, reassurance and the contact form are designed around answering those questions in sequence. The enquiry route is a continuation of the care, not a hard sell.

Practice Clarity in use

Working material, shared selectively.

The live document contains the fuller strategic thinking. These examples show the type of decisions it holds without reproducing personal or clinically sensitive material. Future client extracts would always be selected together, redacted where needed and approved before publication.

Positioning prompt

What should a suitable client understand before they enquire?

A clear sense of the approach, tone, practical arrangements and whether the space feels right for them.

Client experience

What should the first contact communicate?

That the enquiry will be read by a real person, treated carefully, and does not commit someone to counselling.

Design principle

What should the visual system avoid?

Stock “therapy” imagery and decoration that risks making the practice feel generic, impersonal or over-promised.

Reflection

What I would improve next time.

01

Shorten discovery setup

This project developed the framework as it went. Client projects will begin with the established Practice Clarity flow and clearer handover points.

02

Fix approval gates earlier

Messaging, sitemap and visual direction should each be formally approved before the build begins, protecting focus later in the project.

03

Plan case-study capture from day one

With permission, selected decisions and approved artefacts can be recorded as the work develops rather than reconstructed at launch.
